Getting in sync

Today is 1/11/11, a perfect day to talk about synchronicity. (November 11 this year will be even more perfect for this conversation).

And the point I will make is that getting in sync is an art. For many years, this was not an issue for me. In fact, there was a time that I really enjoyed not having a schedule, a routine, a non-9-to-5 job, etc.

Then, I had some life changes. I had a child. I got a 9-5 job. I trained for a 5K. Routine became my middle name. As we get older, this routine provides the framework of our life, but it can be stifling. So as I watched "Men Who Swim," I got pulled in deeper and deeper because I could relate....

It seems odd, because this documentary I saw on WKAR is about a group of men who are synchronized swimmers. I'm not a man, I don't swim, and I don't know the first thing about synchronized swimming...except that you have to be in sync. It seems that the main character and producer of this film was looking for people to be in sync with, so he literally sought out a literal connection.

Here's a clip of the documentary:

What I find particularly interesting is the connection of getting in sync to ART. I know people who, in middle age, have taken up all kinds of pursuits. Interestingly, many of the pursuits are a quest for creativity, a deviation from routine, and a thirst for something new. All to get ourselves back in sync.

Did you see "Men Who Swim" on PBS? Are you on a creative quest to get in sync?
